The bridge-testing gang visit Lapworth
Many of the footbridges over the Stratford-on-Avon Canal were constructed in two halves, cantilevered out from a brick abutment to leave a narrow gap between the two parts so that boats could pass the towrope through without having to unhitch it from the horse. Bridge 36, which carries the towpath from one side of the canal to the other at the head of Lock 21, was so constructed. Here we see a party of visiting canal historians and enthusiasts seemingly trying for a “Guinness Book of Records” entry for the largest number of people that could stand on a canal bridge as they crowd round their guide. The bricklayers and ironfounders who built the Stratford Canal can justly feel proud of the solidity of their workmanship!
