Lapworth Junction,, Stratford-on-Avon Canal
As a narrowboat emerges from Lock 20 on the right to proceed towards the camera and beyond to the Grand Union Canal, the "bridge-testing party" of historians seen in an earlier picture have moved on to another cantilevered split bridge, though here there seems to be less room on the bridge for all their number. The bridge they are standing on was a former stop-lock -- a gate recess can be seen in the wall on the right-hand side -- between the Stratford-on-Avon and Grand Union Canals that had been blocked during a dispute between the two canal companies about water rights. Thereafter boats from the Grand Union Canal wishing to go to Stratford had to pass up Lock 20 to the right, turn through 180 degrees and immediately pass down through another lock. More recently British Waterways, now owner of both canals has re-opened the old direct and level passage.
