View of Ramsbottom
The town of Ramsbottom seen here in the bottom of the valley came about as the result of the Industrial Revolution.
The age of the town is not known but there is evidence of settlements in the area dating from at least 4,000 BC.
From the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century the area saw rapid industrial growth with the building of mills and factories for the spinning and weaving of wool and later cotton.
The monument on top of the hill is SD7716 : Peel Tower which is a memorial to Sir Robert Peel the founder of the modern police force as we know it today.
A public subscription provided the £1,000 needed to build the tower in 1852.
The tower occupies a prominent position overlooking Ramsbottom on Holcombe Hill 1100 feet (335 metres) above sea level.
