The old National Temperance Hospital
The old National Temperance Hospital
With the temperance movement gaining popularity in the late 19th century, the London Temperance Hospital was founded in 1873 at 112 Gower Street. Land was purchased from St James' Church in 1879 on Hampstead Road and the hospital moved there in 1885 It was incorporated into the National Health Service in 1948 and eventually came under the management of University College Hospital. It has been disused as a hospital since 2002 (approx). A proposal to build a new National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) on the site was not completed. Currently there are plans to sell the National Temperance Hospital site to fund a new NIMR at Brill Place (just north of the British Library). This is a controversial proposal which is being fought by various groups in Camden on safety and environmental grounds.
