'Puffing Billy' - Welcome to Wylam road sign
William Hedley, an inventor who lived at Wylam Hall, experimented with steam engines for use on smooth iron rails on the local colliery waggonways. He built 'Puffing Billy' in 1814 at Wylam Forge and this and another early locomotive, 'Wylam Dilly', were still working at Wylam Colliery in 1860. LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
