Forestry in the Foxhunting Inclosure, New Forest
The plantation was originally enclosed in 1840, and some oak from this time survives. It is mixed with more recent conifers such as the Scots pine seen here. The soil is poor and boggy, originally one of the lower slopes of Beaulieu Hilltop Heath. The area in the foreground has recently been cleared and deep ruts have been left by the forestry machinery.
