Vertical strata
Vertical strata
A rock outcrop on Banc Bwlchygarreg LinkExternal link , just north of the forestry track leading to Esgair Hir mine LinkExternal link and the forest beyond LinkExternal link , shows mudstone strata (each layer only a few mm thick) which split well and are orientated almost vertically. Mudstone is a marine sediment, so the layers have been rotated by 90 degrees due to tectonic movements since the sediment was laid down around 500 million years ago. An exposed fold nearby LinkExternal link demonstrates the forces at play.
