Dam of breached mine pond at Esgair Hir
Dam of breached mine pond at Esgair Hir
At Esgair Hir mine, lead and copper ore was extracted from a narrow quartz LinkExternal link vein which contained the valuable minerals. It has been suggested that the mine had been in use in Roman times (Coflein[1]: LinkExternal link ) but the mine was first opened during the modern age in 1691, and until 1708 a line of individual shafts LinkExternal link was dug along the vein. In 1760, mining activity was resumed and a level driven underground to connect some of the older shafts. This was a short-lived venture, but the mine was operated again on and off until 1904 (Mindat: LinkExternal link ). It appears that the workings moved gradually eastwards from the initial shafts in the west LinkExternal link to Esgair Hir proper with its system of ponds LinkExternal link and leats driving a water wheel LinkExternal link and then on to Esgair Fraith LinkExternal link to the east. For aerial images, see LinkExternal link .
