Sycamore in January
Sycamore in January
Cwm Gwyn. The plan is to photograph this tree through the year.
The sycamore (Acer pseudoplanus), sycamorwyddan in Welsh, has lost popularity in the C20 owing to its propensity to regenerate and colonize existing woodland and wasteland but it can be an impressive tree.
It is not native and there is disagreement over the date of its introduction: some believe it came with the Romans, others point to the fact that it was not mentioned in written records until the C16. It became a popular tree for landscaping parkland and in Wales was often planted beside farms to shade the dairy.
Sycamore wood being white and odourless was used to make cooking and eating utensils, also clogs: clog dancers like it because the wood is light and provides extra bounce!
