NZ6012 : Bomber Decoy Command Bunker

3 km from Kildale, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Bomber Decoy Command Bunker
Bomber Decoy Command Bunker
During the Second World War this bunker housed RAF personnel who maintained an extensive system of ditches filled with oily rags which covered about four acres on the slope below the bunker. When radar reports came in of approaching German bombers aiming for industrial Teesside the oily rags were electrically ignited to trick the bomber crew into dropping their load on the largely unpopulated moors.
