Tidal inlet near Lower Pennington
Tidal inlet near Lower Pennington
This area was once the home of the salt industry. Salt pans were flooded with sea water and allowed to evaporate. The brine was then pumped out and the process finished with fires. Inlet such as this were built for boats to load. This one is called Moses Dock and has a single gate to keep it flooded at high tide. The sluices were open when this photo was taken. The industry here collapsed when cheaper salt became available from Cheshire
