The 'Duke' at Clifton.
The last express passenger steam locomotive built by British Railways, No. 71000 'Duke of Gloucester', hauls a special train from Carlisle to Crewe at Clifton on 27th August 2005. She was built at Crewe in 1954 and was used on the crack expresses between London and Glasgow until the diesels made her redundant in 1962. She languished in a scrapyard in South Wales until 1973 when a group of enthusiasts rescued her and spent over 15 years and an tremendous amount of money restoring her back to main line running condition.
