SMS316, an AEC Swift, climbs the hill towards Barnet Church. This route, originally double-deck crew operated, was converted to One-Person-Operation in 1969 and operated by the longer AEC Merlins. It was converted to double deckers again in 1975, so quite what a swift was doing on the route in 1980 is a bit of a mystery! Quite possibly this is a late sunday afternoon.

The 84 route was always an anomaly within the London Transport network, being a red route that went deep into the country bus area. Nowadays it is not a TFL route (ex London Transport), but is a commercial operation by Metroline, with support from Hertfordshire County Council and support from TFL over the Barnet to Potters Bar section. TfL Oyster cards can only be used on the Barnet-Potters Bar section.

The bus stop, visible behind the bus, is still there causing buses to stop in the left turn lane. The tall building behind the stop is the Red Lion pub - later called the Dandelion.
