Brow Well
On the 3rd July 1796 in a very weak condition Robert Burns came here for a 'cure' on the advice of his doctor, William Maxwell, who had diagnosed stabbing gout. It was supposed the Chalbeate well with its iron content would help, as would prolonged immersion in the sea waters of the Solway. He was in fact suffering from endocarditis and this 'treatment' made his condition worse.
He returned home to Dumfries on the 18th July and died there 3 days later.
