Birthplace of John Paul Jones
Here at Kirkbean, John Paul Jones, founder of the US Navy was born in 1747 the son of the gardener at Arbigland estate. Named John Paul at birth he ran off to sea and later added the name Jones. Whilst serving as mate on slave ships he made several voyages to the USA and settled there. During the American War of Independence he commanded a fleet which made an abortive landing at Whitehaven and also sailed up the Forth threatening Edinburgh which was only saved by a providential shift of wind. In 1788 he commanded a Russian fleet in the Baltic
and died in Paris in 1792. His body being returned to the USA in 1905. The cottage is now a museum much visited by visiting Americans.
