Iron Grave Slab, St Dunstan's Church, Mayfield
Iron Grave Slab, St Dunstan's Church, Mayfield
This is the tomb of Thomas Sands a Hammerman from the Hawksden Forge in Mayfield, which was at the heart of the Sussex Iron Industry. His will is marked with a cross showing that he was illiterate. According to the Church Guide, this slab would have been made by an unskilled moulder - note that the N in SANDS and the 7 are back-to-front.
