The Midland Hotel is a Grade 2* listed Art Deco building. It opened in 1933 taking the place of an earlier hotel, also called the Midland, which had occupied the site since 1848. In 1932 The London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company who were responsible for the old Midland Hotel and decided to replace the existing Victorian building with a more modern structure and selected the architect Oliver Hill to provide the company with "a building of international quality in the modern style". Hill's design was for a 3-storey, curved structure which followed the line of the new municipal promenade, with its convex side towards the sea allowing good views from every room. The new Midland Hotel opened on Wednesday 12th July 1933.

After falling into a state of dereliction it has recently been completely renovated and re-opened in Spring of 2008.
