Professor Codman's Punch and Judy Show on the Promenade
The Codman family have been staging Punch and Judy shows at Llandudno since the 1860s and remain a highly popular attraction on the promenade. At Deiniolen Primary School, we had two annual set of visitors paid for by the Education Committee, the lively Professor Codman, Toby his dog and Punch and Judy, and the dreaded Bangor Trio (violin, cello and piano). Unfortunately, the spinsterish Bangor Trio were to remain a part of our lives long after we were considered to have outgrown the delights of the Punch and Judy Show.
Codman's Punch & Judy
Codman's Punch & Judy was started in Llandudno in 1860 by Richard Codman, a travelling showman who was stranded in Llandudno after his horse died. He gathered driftwood from the beach and hand )carved the Punch & Judy puppets and the proscenium which you still see here today. In 1864 he gained approval from Lord Mostyn to perform on Llandudno promenade. The show, now in the care of the 5th generation of the Codman family has performed every summer for over 150 years.
