A memorial on the wall of the church, Captain William Berkeley was the commander of His Majesty's Ship the Tyger during her passage from the coast of Guinea to the West Indies when he died on 25th March 1733, aged 33. He was buried in the ocean.
William had matriculated at Christchurch Oxford aged 16.
