Queens Hotel
Queens Hotel
Opened as the Markwell Hotel in 1870 on the site of Brills Baths who were moving to a new site in East Street which later became the ABC Cinema and is now a series of bars, restaurants and a casino, though one of the baths still remains in the cellar of the current hotel though it is not open to the public. The building is visible at the end of King's Road. Before Brills it was the site of Mahomed's Bath which looked directly over the sea and was run by Sake Dene Mahomed, an Indian who arrived in Britain in the late 18th century and became Shampooing Surgeon to George IV. As well as running baths Mahomed opened the first Indian restaurant in the country though this was not a success. He died in 1851 at the age of 102 and is buried in St Nicholas' churchyard. King's Road was laid out along the seafront in 1810 and began in East Street but this arrangement was soon found to be inconvenient and the consequence was the opening of Grand Junction Road in 1829 that continued the coastal route around the front of the Old Steine. Today it is the A259. The building on the left, Dr Brighton's, began life in the 1780s as the Star and Garter Hotel was given the nickname, its current name, during the 19th century when the then proprietor began listing 'consulting times' and 'medicinal remedies' for his clientile.
