A pile of boulders that is NOT Bedd Crynddyn
We thought we were at the site of Bedd Crynddyn when we came out of the woods at the head of Cwm Orog. However, some detailed local knowledge from Mal Morris informs me that the Bedd is on the summit of the ridge in the background (just to the right of the landrover), and this pile of boulders is nothing more than agricultural debris placed there when the farmer tried to plough this area some 30 years ago.
Bedd Crynddyn is normally translated as 'Shivering Grave', but there are some alternatives. 'Cryn' can mean both 'small' or 'quivering', so it could be that the tumulus is the grave of a small man who had the shakes, or just a small man. Equally 'crynddyn' has been translated as 'boyish', which ties in with the idea of someone who was small of stature when he died.
