The statue on top of the fountain is Temperance by Wills Bros. The fountain was presented in 1861 by Samuel Gurney, founder of what later became the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Cattle and Trough Association. It was moved here from its original site by the Royal Exchange in 1911.
