Wainhouse Tower
Wainhouse Tower
Built by John Edward Wainhouse to comply with "The Smoke Abatement Act of 1870" it was built as a chimney to take the smoke from his dyeworks on Washer Lane via a flue to the structure. The inner core of the structure is a chimney with a spiral staircase between that and the outer stone casing. For the full story of the construction and the feud between John Edward Wainhouse and Sir Henry Edwards (who was a strong objector to its construction) use the link LinkExternal link
