Malham Tarn
Malham Tarn
The tarn appears completely out of place in limestone country. Its existence is due to an inlier of Silurian slates which are impervious. Water leaving the tarn at its southern end soon meets carboniferous limestone and sinks underground. Looking NW towards the snow flecked slopes of Fountains Fell.
