This square contains two ridges of Silurian rocks, with a valley between. It is in the former Broughton-in-Furness CP, now Duddon CP. The ridge to the west is Eccle Riggs Bank, and on it is Eccle Riggs Farm. The Cross family owned it in 1789. There was a windmill here, disused by1890. Further south in parkland the Manor Hotel, which was Eccle Riggs House, was built in 1865 in Tudor style of local slate and Lancashire stone facings. In 1882 it was the home of Sir R. A.Cross. West of the farm, next to the road at
SD210867, is Bush Green Quarry with the so-called Donkey Rocks (see photo).
The name of the farm at Coal Gate suggests that there was mining nearby, and perhaps the track to Foxfield was used to transport coal to the shore, but there is no sign of a mine on the 1850 map.
At Windmill Hill
SD217868 it appears that the original road was too steep for coaches and a zigzag was made, probably in the 18C, using the upper part of Coal Gate Lane and a new length of road (deduced from the way that it cuts through a field boundary) constructed down from the group of cottages called Mean Field.
In the SE corner, Low Wood Stile is built a little up the hillside from the present main road, suggesting that long ago the loop past the farm was the original line of the road.
