Thames and Severn Canal crossing near Cricklade
Thames and Severn Canal crossing near Cricklade
When the Cricklade bypass was being constructed it was planned to cross the currently disused line of the Thames and Severn canal almost on the level. This would have produced a major obstacle to the currently restoration project for the canal. After considerable campaigning and public pressure the department for roads finally relented and incorporated this bridge into the road scheme. The alignment of the bridge can be seen under the carriageways with the line of trees showing the course of the canal heading off towards Eysey in the distance
