First battle of Newbury
First battle of Newbury
The OS symbol for the 1st battle of Newbury, 20th September 1643, is shown in this field. In practice the battle took place over a large part of the area, over a mile in each direction from here including a substantial area of Wash Common that is now built over.

In the background the A34 can be seen coming past its junction with the A4 at Speen SU449681 before dropping down into the Kennet valley. This was one of the major site of the 3rd battle of Newbury in 1996.
