River Irwell, looking west
River Irwell, looking west
Westward (downstream) view of the Irwell from Manchester Exchange station approach. The nearest bridge is called Victoria Bridge (nothing to do with Victoria station), while the more distant three-arched bridge carries Blackfriars Street. In the nineteenth century, this part of the Irwell was regarded as being navigable as far upstream as Hunt's Bank.
