The Bridgewater Monument, Ashridge
The Bridgewater Monument, Ashridge
The Bridgewater monument was built in 1832 in memory of Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, 1736-1803. (See Wikipedia for biography.) He is referred to as “the father of inland navigation” because of his pioneering work in building the Worsley to Manchester Canal, and later the Liverpool to Manchester Canal.
The Ashridge National Trust Estate
The Ashridge Estate covers a wide area of the Chiltern Hills on the Hertfordshire Buckinghamshire border, which provides open access to large woods and open grassland. There are many footpaths and bridleways - including part of the Ridgeway – and wonderful opportunities to observe wild life – including deer.
The Estate Office, Visitor Centre and Café are close to the Bridgewater Monument on Moneybury Hill, above the village of Aldbury.
