SK2456 : Remains of Lode Mill

taken 10 years ago, near to Ible, Derbyshire, Great Britain

Remains of Lode Mill
Remains of Lode Mill
Water-powered corn mill, now in an advanced state of decay, although it was likely to have been built before 1700. Records show that farm workers living above the valley in Ible would bring their harvested crops for milling here, on payment of a fee. The chap who lives nearby tells me that since the mill race was replaced with a man-made pipe, the flood risk has actually increased, and occasionally the water backs up and the storage pen nearby starts to fill up - just as it was originally intended to do.
