NS3678 : A lichen - Hypogymnia tubulosa

A lichen - Hypogymnia tubulosa
A lichen - Hypogymnia tubulosa
This species is fairly similar to H. physodes – NS3976 : A lichen - Hypogymnia physodes – and grows in similar situations. The lichen is shown here growing on one of the stones of a dry-stone wall.

When found on wood, H. tubulosa shows more of a preference for growing on twigs than does H. physodes. It is also the less common of the two species. It has lobes that tend to be more cylindrical (hence the "tubulosa"), and less flattened than in H. physodes.

Visible in this photo at the ends of the lobes are powdery masses called soralia; these allow the lichen to reproduce asexually (see NS3678 : A lichen - Parmelia sulcata).
