taken 15 years ago, near to Aldbury, Hertfordshire, England

Old Chalk Pit on Moneybury Hill
Old Chalk Pit on Moneybury Hill
While the Chilterns are made of chalk the level top has a layer of clayey deposits which means that the land is short of lime, As a result a number of small chalk quarries were dug along the edge of the ridge to provide lime to improve the land. This hollow would appear to be such a quarry.
