Sunken Tracks up Caudale Moor
Sunken Tracks up Caudale Moor
All leading to Caudale Quarry (NY4010) at 500m altitude. The tracks result from the practice of sledging blocks of green slates down into the valley. The blocks were then transported on horseback to Ullswater and ferried to Pooley Bridge.

The sledges, or trail barrows, carried approximately eight hundredweight or 0.4 of a tonne with the 'driver' in front like a horse. His job was merely to keep it on the tract and keep the speed down. Easier said than done.
