Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery
The building in the centre of the picture is the
Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery.
The museum opened in 1962 and is situated in one of the out buildings of the 19th century Victoria Mill the only part of the mill to survive
with the rest of the mill originally occupying the car park to the left of the museum.
In 1980 the Museum was extended thanks to a well supported public appeal, and an Art Gallery was added for exhibitions which also serves
for various local events including lectures, children's events, and charity fund-raising.
Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery is an independent organization and a registered charity for funding it is reliant on entrance charges, donations, funds raised by the Friends, grants and support from Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council.
One of the hidden treasures of Saddleworth Museum is undoubtedly its archive.
Many people are unaware that under the same roof as the exhibits lies one of the single richest sources of local history to be found anywhere in the north of England.
There are Photographs, Maps, Deeds, Wills, Census Returns and Parish Records with some of the earliest items dating back to the late 1500s.
