Raywell House
Raywell House
Raywell House was built in 1803 for local Member of Parliament Daniel Sykes (1766-1832), an anti-slavery campaigner and friend of William Wilberforce. Raywell later became the Fairfield Sanatorium, a farm colony for convalescent or chronic TB cases, from November 1919 until December 1976 when its functions were transferred to York District Hospital. Raywell became an expedition and field studies centre for a while but has recently been converted into apartments.
