The Brewhouse, Sun Street, Hitchin
The Brewhouse, Sun Street, Hitchin
The long building on the left, with 9 upstairs windows, was the dwelling house of the Lucas family who owned the adjoining brewery. The house was built in about 1780 and was used by the family until the late 1850's. It was subsequently used by brewery staff until the brewery was closed in 1923. Always called the 'Brewhouse' by the family, some claim that it is the most haunted house in Hitchin, but the current owners, the Philpotts, in which family it has been for 72 years, say that they have never experienced any ghostly apparitions. The Philpotts use the building as a furniture retail outlet and the 1st floor has been converted into a showroom and office accommodation, although some original features remain. The building partly seen on the right dates from the 1920's and was built on the site of the brewery offices.
