Sand and gravel extraction at Block Fen
Sand and gravel extraction at Block Fen
Large quantities of sand and gravel are being extracted from areas of low-lying land at Block Fen. It is anticipated that the area will provide some 1.4 million tonnes of sand and gravel. The pits that are being created will be used to dispose of around half a million tonnes of inert waste from the building industry.

When the site has been exhausted, some 480 hectares of lowland wet grassland will be created, immediately adjacent to the Ouse Washes, and will provide ancillary water storage and supply, for irrigation purposes.

Some former quarries at Block Fen have already been turned into angling lakes TL4284 : Lake at Block Fen.
