Pillow Lava SSSI Chipley Quarry
Pillow Lava SSSI Chipley Quarry
Noted as a classic site for the study of pillow lavas estimated at around 360 million years old. These were extruded as a result of volcanic activity. Having been extruded into the sea, each pillow settled with a typical convex upper surface and with a somewhat flattened lower surface. Such characteristics can be seen in the movement of the materials used in a typical domestic lava lamp.
