TQ2995 : Hazel (Corylus avellana)

taken 9 years ago, near to Southgate, Enfield, Great Britain

Hazel (Corylus avellana)
Hazel (Corylus avellana)
An example of both the male and female flowers of the Hazel. The female flowers are the small dark pink/red flowers at the top of the image. The male catkin produces prolific amounts of pollen, which is carried on the wind to the female flowers. Although the tree produces nuts, they never reach maturity as the grey squirrels take them before they are ripe.
