The Start of the Bypass
The Start of the Bypass
In recent weeks the trees which formerly hid the view from the end of the bridge have been felled to clear the way for the construction of a sorely needed bypass. Despite a vigorous campaign for a dual carriageway bypassing both Fochabers and Mosstodloch to the south, the Scottish Executive's decision was to build a single carriageway to the north of the village, on the route envisaged when the new bridge was built 40 or so years ago. In my opinion this route will quickly become inadequate for the volume of traffic, and there is no room to add a second carriageway in the future.

One consequence of the start of work is that the gate giving access to the walk around the Lake has been locked, and this is giving rise to great anger in the village. The proponents of the southern route point out that the estate is on record as saying that the gate to the Lake would be closed off if a northern bypass were built, and that if those now complaining about the loss of access to the Lake had been more vociferous in support of the southern route, there might have been a different decision. Frankly, I doubt it. The cost of the southern, infinitely more desirable, route would have approached double that of the northern route, and the Scottish Executive has, predictably, opted for the cheapest rather than the optimal route.
