NT6087 : Defoliated ground, Bass Rock

taken 9 years ago, 3 km from Auldhame, East Lothian, Great Britain

Defoliated ground, Bass Rock
Defoliated ground, Bass Rock
This was once the sheep pasture and appears green in a lot of recent photographs. In recent years the gannet population has recovered and almost the entire island is claimed as nest sites. There is now little vegetation. The small mounds on the ground are nests. Within weeks of this being taken, at the end of February, the gannets will have returned and covered the island once more.
