Brothers Grimm in Roy Gorge
Brothers Grimm in Roy Gorge
Brothers Grimm is the hardest rapid on the Middle Roy (Roy Gorge) and is often portaged. The narrow fall nearest the left hand standing figure tips the kayaker viciously towards the undercut rock between the two falls, whilst the wider fall on river left is very rocky and difficult to approach with any speed for a boof. The distant figure is standing on a huge river-spanning boulder which used to be the undercut river-right wall in a rapid known as Headbanger. That rapid is now a definite portage since the collapse. Most parties portage both drops and put back on river left (lower right of this photo). The shot shows the river at a very low level - probably about the lowest it is feasible to paddle the gorge, which is a sustained grade IV, though probably at the lower end of the grade at this level.
