TQ8860 : Ducks on the lychgate

Ducks on the lychgate
I was on the village millennium committee and after discussing several options it was decided to build a green oak lychgate for the southern entrance to the churchyard from Bexon Lane and a wrought iron lantern gate for the western entrance from The Street. Various ideas were tossed around and the possibility of adding sheep or ducks to the ridge tiles was suggested. The village duck pond Link

is central to Bredgar whereas sheep are less prominent as a 'crop' these days so we decided upon ducks.
I accompanied the chair of the Parish Council on a visit to the manufacturer of the Kent peg tiles which would be used for the roof. This was a small concern near Sutton Valence TQ802461. They have their own clay pit on site and we were given a tour of the sheds where the actual tiles are made. Discussing the possibility of decorative ridge tiles the proprietor showed us the only other one he had ever produced. This was a shire horse and he had enlarged a picture from one of his children's books as a template. He could certainly do us some ducks if we produced the drawings. So, armed with the dimensions of the ridge tiles I went home and drew up templates for a duck and duckling. This is the result and I see from their website Link
they now also offer sheep.
