Site of Lady Lindsay's Castle
Site of Lady Lindsay's Castle
A mediaeval building stood on this promontory, a good 250 feet above the river. The story goes that Janet Gordon, Lady Lindsay, was imprisoned here early in the sixteenth century for the murder of her brutal husband, Alexander. Her daily task was to spin a thread long enough to reach the bottom of the gorge. Whether it was the living woman or her ghost who suffered this fate, nobody can say. If you'd like to know more, Maurice Fleming gives both versions in his splendid collection The Ghost o' Mause (Edinburgh: Mercat Press, 1995), pp. 61-63.
