Swine Carrs
Swine Carrs
Looking east along the farm road between Hill Farm and Swine village, with Woodhouse Cottages on the left and Hill Farm Cottage in the distance. Many of the farms and cottages in Swine were built or rebuilt by the Crown Estate between the 1860s and the 1900s. The "carrs" is a name often used in East Yorkshire and traditionally meant rough pasture on reclaimed marshland which was only suitable for grazing when the water level was low. These days the land is used all year round, sometimes for cattle grazing but mainly for growing cereal crops.
