Carr House, Swine Carrs
Carr House, Swine Carrs
A building here on the north side of the bridleway is still marked on O/S 1:25000 scale maps. It had gone by the time I last came here in June 2006. The "carrs" is a name often used in East Yorkshire and traditionally meant rough pasture on reclaimed marshland which was only suitable for grazing when the water level was low. These days the land is used all year round, sometimes for cattle grazing but mainly for growing cereal crops. The old Carr House was on a small but prominent hill, just too small to be shown by the contours on the map.
