SO4024 : Ditch at Grosmont Castle

taken 10 years ago, near to Grosmont, Monmouthshire/Sir Fynwy, Great Britain

Ditch at Grosmont Castle
Ditch at Grosmont Castle
Founded by the Normans, probably before 1200, to control the lands they had won in N.Gwent. At that time construction would have been earth and timber and the great ditch of that ringwork castle survives. In 1201 the castle passed to Hubert de Burgh, a powerful Marcher lord who rebuilt the castle in stone.
