The Cross Stone
The Cross Stone
The gate visible behind the stone is the one shown here: NS3681 : Gate on the Stoneymollan Road footpath.

The large flat stone in the foreground is marked on the 1:25000 map as "Cross Stone", and was the base of a stone cross until the late nineteenth century. Details at WoSAS: LinkExternal link

In order to support the cross, the stone has a hole in the centre of its upper surface; in another picture, that hole is clearly visible NS3681 : The Cross Stone.

For other views of the stone in context, see NS3681 : The Cross Stone and NS3681 : The Cross Stone.

Until a few months ago before the present picture was taken, it would not have been practical to photograph the stone from those angles, since it would have been densely shaded by forestry (now cleared see the link at the start of this item) that extended right up to the line of the fence.
The Cross Stone
In the centre of the stone is a socket, which once supported a cross. The adjacent footpath is an old coffin road; it is now called the Stoneymollan Road LinkExternal link but old maps called it the Cross Stone Road, after this stone.
The Stoneymollan Road
This route from Balloch to the clachan of Kirkton was an old coffin road (see LinkExternal link for details); its destination was the burial ground at St Mahew's Chapel LinkExternal link near Cardross. The eastern part of this old road lies upon one of several parallel ridges; the underlying geology must therefore have played an important role in determining its course.
