Some village names require much academic explanation, but Steep is just, well....steep. It is just outside Petersfield but has a quite distinct identity, perhaps because it has never been part of that parish but rather, in times past, coupled with East Meon. It is perhaps most famous for its association with the arts and crafts movement. The poet Edward Thomas, the furniture designer Edward Barnsley and the royal doctor Thomas Horder have all made there home here. Its most famous institution is the pioneering public school, Bedales.
