White Lion, Hartfordbridge
This is the former White Lion coaching inn at Hartfordbridge, now an antiques centre. Allegedly the haunt of Highwayman Dick Turpin, it was on the main admiralty route to the ports of Southampton, Buckler's Hard, Weymouth, Plymouth and Falmouth. It was the location of the 18th post-horse change on Lt. Lapenotiere's journey from Falmouth to London, bringing news of victory at Trafalgar but the death of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1805. A plaque, erected during the bi-centenary re-enactment, is fixed to the wall here SU7757 : The Trafalgar Way - 18th post-horse change. The entrance to the stables is under the arch towards the right of the building.

The inn was also used by Cromwell and the roundheads during the English civil war 1643 to 1646, basing themselves here during the siege of Basing House. Later, George III and his family took breakfast here on a journey from Windsor to Weymouth. The tea rooms and cafe are still available for breakfast, lunch and cream teas; Queen Elizabeth II please note.

The road subsequently became the A30 and was the main route to the South-West for many years before being superseded by the M3. This section was dualled although for safety reasons the London-bound carriageway seen here is now single again.
